What is Cod Liver Oil?

Cod liver oil is a popular food supplement with a long history of use. It is sourced from the liver of codfish. Cod liver oil is a good source of omega 3, it is also a source of vitamins A & D. These supplements are an ideal way to ensure you are hitting your optimum omega 3 intakes.

Cod liver oil is thought to reduce the pain, tenderness, and stiffness associated with joint problems such as arthritis.

The DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in cod liver oil is a vital brain nutrient. Cod liver oil supplements are often used to support normal brain function. It is thought that supplementing with cod liver oil can be beneficial for the mood too.

Each capsule provides 100% of your recommended Vitamin A. Vitamin A contributes to normal skin and normal vision. Diets supplemented with cod liver oil have demonstrated positive effects on skin health, particularly psoriasis.

Cod liver oil supplements are a source of vitamin D. Most of our vitamin D is made by the body when exposed to sunshine. Unfortunately, in the UK, many of us do not get enough vitamin D from sunshine alone, so supplementation can be useful to ensure we meet our optimal intake.

Omega 3

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are just that – essential to life! We cannot manufacture these within our body, so we have to rely on getting what we need from our diet. Omega- 3 EPA is a classification of certain kinds of fatty acids that result from the breakdown of dietary fats in the body. They are used to form membranes surrounding each of our trillions of cells.

The body needs Omega-3 EFA’s to manufacture and repair cell membranes, enabling the cells to obtain optimum nutrition. When the body lacks EFA’s, it uses saturated fats to create cell membranes. This produces cells with rigid, inflexible membranes that have difficulty performing some basic cellular functions. Brain tissue is largely made up of fatty acids, which are essential to healthy brain development and maintenance. DHA is most concentrated in the brain and retina.
